I have been hiring for WebSpero Solutions for past 3 years, and here are somethings that I have learned by hiring for my team.
1. #Years Experience is Overrated
Minimum 5 years of experience required!
Minimum 7 years of Experience required!
I have seen lot of job posts with such requirements and initially did the same while hiring for my own company. But very soon I realized that Job experience is over rated. It does not really matter how many years a person has spent in the industry, what matters is what he has done in those years.
May be 1 year or 2 years is the time a person takes to learn about the industry but after that it doesn’t really matter. What matters is what all a person has done, how much has he explored in the job role.
2. Culture Fit Is Important
I always thought culture is just a jargon used by Fortune 500 firms, but when I hired the 10th employee, I realized culture is for real.
and it is something you need to build consciously. And once you have a culture, some values, you must see if the new hiring will fit in. You don’t want your lean open team to turn into a bureaucratic non productive team just by hiring few managers who have done relevant work but have totally different values than what your organization has.

3. 30 Minutes are not Enough!
A 30 minute interview tells you the same amount about a candidate as much a TV ad tells you about a product. You might buy it after watching the ad, but when you actually see the product, you might feel frustrated. It has happened with us a lot of times.
Now,We almost never hire anyone directly after an interview. We hire a person on a trial job, we hire them on hourly basis for few hours a week, and we work with them for couple of weeks. It gives us and the person a clear idea if we are a right fit and if it works out only then we offer full time roles. Hiring is slow but it directly impacts the work and improves retention as well.
