Do you realize that we have been tricked?
We have been tricked by our society, our education system and our brain. All our lives we have been chasing the wrong dream. We have been measuring success on the wrong scale.
Confused? Let me ask you a question.
What makes us Rich?
Most of the times, the answer I get is “Money Makes Us Rich”
But does money actually make us rich? It doesn’t.
Friends, Money is just a tool.
Its just a medium that we can use to achieve any outcomes. For example, if you want to buy a car, you spend money and buy a car. Buying a car, gives meaning to the money you spend. Similarly, you want to fly business class, you buy tickets. Spending money to buy business class tickets give meaning to the money that you have spent.
But what if you can’t fulfill any objective?
Remember demonetization ? Just think you have lot of old currency notes. Do they make you rich? No, because you can’t fulfill any objective using that currency. Similarly without having any objective to fulfill, the money doesn’t make you rich.
So what makes us Rich?
Its the ability to fulfill the objectives. Its the ability to achieve some outcomes.
What kind of outcomes?
Outcomes that you value.
Outcomes that give you a sense of pleasure, fulfillment and a sense of pride. May be Luxury, May be Comfort or May be Love.
But most of the times, we never actually think of the objectives that we want to achieve, we just keep on accumulating money.
and I am not against accumulating money, but at what cost. We are doing it at cost of our Time. Time my friends, is the most precious resource that we have and if there’s no time left, we have nothing.
Many people work for long hours, work 16 hrs a day or more to make more money to fulfill some dream. You are working your ass off because you want to own a bigger house. That’s great, you have a purpose , do it. Your work in itself gives you a feeling of fulfillment. Brilliant, go ahead and spend as many hours as you can in your work without even thinking of money. You have an aspiration , a need , do it. But don’t do it because people around you are doing it. Its their aspiration, their objective not yours. It might make them rich but not you.
May be you are happy making Rs60k a month and it fulfills all your objectives, so instead of trying to make say Rs80k a month , why not think of ways to earn 60k a month by spending lesser time. May be saving 2 hrs a day.
2hrs a day , 365 days a year, gives you more than 700 hrs. 700hrs! What can you do in those 700 hrs to add value to your life.
Pick up a hobby that you enjoyed in the childhood but left it to make time to make money.
or spend more time with your daughter.
I’ve a friend, he is a consultant, he works long hours and makes good amount of money, but every time we meet, he frets that he doesn’t have much time for his family and kids, and I ask him why don’t you switch and find a job that gives you more time. He says no other job pays that well. I ask him, then what, switch to a job that pays you less but gives you time for your family. He just laughs me off and tells me “Who does that, who switches to a less paying job” .
and I just look at him and think “He is a very poor guy with lots of money”.
Don’t be that poor guy.Think of the objectives that you want to achieve in your life. See how much money and time you need to fulfill those and then put your efforts to make both.Money and Time and be rich and have a more fulfilling life.
